Are Wavemakers really worth it? If so what do you use?

Just curious if they do any good? Marine depot has a jbj on sale. Is there ocean pulse any good? thanks

I have always used some type of wavemaker except way back in the beginning of the hobby for me. . I am not sure how good the jbj since I have never used one of those.

I'm cheap. I added an extra powerhead and set them on cheap timers. Flow changes throughout the day. Not quite random. Maybe not as good as a wavemaker. But cheap and effective.

I would say if you have a lot of SPS then a wavemaker would be a good idea because it would provide food evenly to the corals. When I start stocking with SPS I will probably buy a controller and alternate flow every 5 or 10 minutes.

I think stagnant water is bad, and wavemakers are a good way to combat this (the one the ocean uses btw). I have had some method of a surge device for >10 years now and would not have a tank without it. Currently, I use a tunze nano wavebox in my SH tank. Everything moves gently back and forth.

I think that true wavemakers put undue stress on the tanks joints and greatly ruduce the life of the tank.
