How do I remove..?

This coral from this frag plug. It has been in there a couple of months and it looks like it is trying to grow around it but it is taking forever. This is an old pic, since it has doubled in size, but the polops are not extending near the plug. Should I just leave it alone at this point or would it be better to get it out of the plug. If I should get it out how do I do this? I tried pliers, but its in there pretty good.

Thanks, Ed

You can have in encrust the plug no big deal. You should use bonecutters. If it's too big at the base to use the hand style. Then a dremel with a saw will take care of it.

Is the bottom getting enough light and flow?

Flow yes, light maybe not.
It has grown quit a bit. It just recently sent out a thin layer of itself accross the top of the plug, about the same time that I saw the loss of polyp extenstion at the base. Could be a coincidence. I dont know.

With corals like that, it's not unusual to have dying branches that are being shadowed.

So it is ok to have the base die?

The base could very well become skeletonized, like a reef, due to overgrowth.
I would let it be, but you could cut it off or as suggested Dremel it off.
Some SPS do not encrust the base like Acros do. Birdsnest do not, I'm not sure about Montis, but looks like it would have encrusted already if it was going to.(that is a Monti, isn't it?)

Heres a couple of updated pics. Other than the base the coral looks great and is growing like a weed.

Should I remove or just leave it?

If it is on a rock you like, i would just putty the base and let her go.
