What fish to stock?
I'm in the process of setting up a 40 gallon breeder reef tank and was wondering if I can get any recommendation as to what types of fish I can stock it with? The tank will be primarily a reef tank (softies and LPSs) but I want my daughter to see a little bit of fishies as well. I'm already thinking of a clownfish and a goby. Also, I would like to keep fish that has a purpose not just for looks. Thank you in advance.

Most of yur fishes are going to be for looks except maybe some of the sand-sifting gobies.

Bicolor blenny, different gobies, sixline wrasse, numerous clowns. Firefish. Just go to liveaquaria.com and and search the fish. You can sort by requirements.

I would get a pair of tank-bred Ocellaris clownfish...and give them a nice-sized toadstool mushroom to host. You will get hours of enjoyment watching the antics of a mated pair in a toadstool. Then get a Diamond Watchman Goby sand-sifter. He will create a mess in your sandbed until he gets things just the way he wants them. Then he will be a great asset keeping your sand clean and white. You want to avoid jumpers like firefish and wrasses unless you can put netting over your tank. For different reasons, your tank is too small for Tangs and Mandarins. Avoid any type of Damsel as they get mean and will attack your other fish. You could get 3-5 green chromis for the look of a "school", but be warned that in many cases, they will start killing off the weak(s) one until you are left with just one... Royal gramma are easy to keep and are very colorful. Get 2-3 and they will hang out together for a nice look. A pair of cleaner shrimp are enjoyable to watch as well... JMHO. Good luck with your tank... LL
