Hydor Koralia Pumps flow

I have (2) #1 Koralia's in my 29 gallon. What would be the optimum locations for these? I see a lot of them on the sides rather than the back, is there a reason for this? I don't have any SPS besides a monti cap and really dont plan on keeping any in this tank...at most a dersea clam. I also have a #2 and a nano not in use. Mine are on the back glass...on opposite sides both pointing toward the center of the tank.

Are there any 'rules of thumb' for the placement of these?

Currently I have the cap, zoas, candy canes, frogspawn, shrooms...

there is really no rule of thumb for placement of pumps. but i have one of mine located on the side and one located on the back. but i have always had mine flowing into each other so that they cause a random water current. its really all in what you prefer.

you could get a wave maker, they are about 50 bucks and they work really well

I am not sure how the wavemaker comment is relevant, but...

The best place to put powerheads is anywhere that doesn't give direct laminar flow on top of your corals and still places such that it doesn't create dead spots. I think the reason it is usually on the side of the tank because tanks are generally wider than they are deep and you get more length of flow before the flow crashes into the glass walls of your tank. That said, I keep mine on the back of the tank in the nano just because I think it looks much better and I have been very happy with it.

the wave maker comment is relevant to nathan hales response because it can create random water current thus effecting the flow or how you can set up your powerheads; it was just an idea. sorry if its not relevant.

There are some Karalias that are made for wave makers, the regular one really are not.
I know the voltage is different in the ones that are made for wavemakers, but not sure what other differences there are.

Its a subjective subject based on need, style, and preference. It will change over time and eliminating "dead spots" is impossible without multiple sources.

What helps is "change", having a dynamic flow pattern that changes to make sure all the "angles" are covered....literally. That is why I preferred the Vortechs. I made sure I have too much flow and could simulate a storm surge to clear out the junk occasionally to make sure it didn't build up. I studied my SPS to make sure they were in optimum placement for both light and flow.

In the end, I found when using ones like Seios or Koralias, more....smaller vs fewer larger helped accomplish my goals.

Below may help predicting flow patterns.

There is no reason to get upset, I was simply stating that the OP asked about pump placement, not about a wave maker. We could have just as easily recommended a closed loop system for whatever reason, but I don't believe that is the information the OP was after.

i also have a 29gallon, i have 2 Koralia 1's and i have them on the sides of the tank, one of the is pointed slightly towards the front glass and the other is pointed slightly towards the rear glass

i wanted to maybe move them to see how i like the flow in other positions but im afraid to disturb anything.. my clown loves my koralia, it always swims within inches of the water coming out lol

I'm not having any issues with flow at the moment....I guess 'if it ain't broke dont fix it'. I was just curious of the proper flow for them. I thought about putting the #2 in there also but that may be too much flow.

im suprised 2 k1s are adequate for a 29 gallon, personally from my experience with these pumps they dont produce much flow, positioning is difficult it is about testing out variable positions and moving them about to suit your reef, all reefs are different, you need to kepp experimenting, long term id suggest a different model.
