Diatoms
Hi everyone,
So my 20 gallon tank has been set up for about 2.5 weeks now and the cycling is complete. I did a 25% water change on Sunday and lowered the nitrates down to about 7 ppm. I noticed a bit of diatoms in my tank and I'm hoping that they dont become a problem. Will the diatoms just eventually leave? Should I be worried? Should I try to get rid of them? Is there an article somewhere about these things? On another note - I found a brissle worm a few minutes ago! I was initially worried until I read that they were a good thing. |

Just another part of the cycle. Frustrating but they'll pass in time with normal tank maintenance

+1 on the frustrating part.. i think some are luckier then others, but ive had a huge diatom break out.. my tank is a 29 gallon and its been running for 4-5months and ive had the algae issue for about 2 months already, i have a good thread on Diatoms where a lot of the forum members have helped me a lot.
if you want to take a look at it here is the link http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1748784 |

You can Puff off the rocks with a Turkey baster and suck it out with your syphon when you do a water change.
NOW.......2 1/2 weeks and your cycle is over ???? I dont think so !!! As far as the Bristle worms......they are fine. You just want to keep an eye on them so they dont get too big for the tank. Bristle Worms.....

Can't agree more on the luckier part. I have a 40 breeder that has been a spawn of Satan. Used rodi from the start, done weekly 10-25% water changes, skimmed 24/7, new t5 fixture, etc. This tank has been evil on diatoms, algae, cyano. I THINK I'm on the last leg of it in terms of maturity. I'm starting a 10 gallon nano for two clowns in our kitchen. This tank has a 7 lb chunk of live rock from the 40 breeder. This 10 gallon has been the most stable cycle I've ever seen. The diatoms immediately died off and powdered the surface with brown die off. This 10 gal is going to be 10x more stable then my 40 and the 10 gal won't have a skimmer or a quality light source. The only light in using is 2 25 watt each incandescents in the hood fixture. Sad but using 2 25 watt incandescents will give me 5 watts per gallon where my 40 breeder tank with the new t5 only gets 3.7 watts per gallon. |

Why wouldn't the nitrogen cycle be over? I dont have any ammonia and I dont have any nitrites, just nitrates.
I'll try the turkey baster thing. Ill just have to make sure theres no turkey stuff on it from Christmas dinner... How long should these diatoms last? |
