Bubble Algae
I have been fighting some bubble algae on one of my rocks. A friend of mine was holding a coral, and got some bubble algae on it. I have kept that piece of rock seperate from the rest of my rock and every week, I have been pulling out the rock and cleaning off bubble algae.
I have two emerald crabs in my tank, but they haven't touched it. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Take the rock out of your tank and either scrape, scrub, cut, or chisel away all the Valonia into a separate pail of saltwater. Even the little ones. Possibly repeat the following week. Trust me, you do NOT want them to spread to your other rocks; 2010 will suck for you.

That is why it is that I have kept it seperated from the rest of the rock work. I do not see any other algae on my other rocks, just that one piece.

if it is a small rock with no coral on it, i would simply remove it from the aquarium and bleach it. so long bubble algae....tootles....later gator.

I had to tear down my 75 due to bubble algae. Get it out b4 it spreads or your toast. The emerald crabs are not the solution.

Just because it isn't touching your other rock doesn't mean it wont spread to them.

Just manually remove it, it will not cause a bubble algae explosion, and syphon out the remaining ones. If an algae is flurishing in your system then the systems is recieving too many nutrients. I have manually removed bubble algae when it popped up for years, and have never had a bubble algae breakout. I would never boil a piece of LR nor would I bleach it, that is not a good means of algae control. Just do a once over and remove all you can manually, keep up on W/C with RO/DI only, and reduce feedings. The problem should resolve it self.

I've never seen anyone rid their tank of bubble algae after it has spread.
I've heard people claim to control it, but never get rid of it for good. |

I've gotten rid of it. What did it for me was a one spot fox face and a lot of hermit crabs. Emerald crabs never worked and only caused problems with corals and clams once they got bigger.

I too have 1 piece of small rock about 2 1/2" that has bubble algae on it but I have none anywhere else in the tank. Unfortunately there are about 20 tiny Zoos on it and I cant bleach it, so I just pluck it about once a month. It has stayed on "just" this rock alone for almost a year now.
I never tried any other method like emerald crabs or anything because it is such a little bit and stays on one rock.
