I am in the process of setting up my mixing/change station for a 180 and was just going to go with the standard brute set up (~$30 container). Since both containers are polyethylene ... why are folks going w/the water storage tanks as they are quite a bit more?

i was thinking about doing the brutes but went this rout because one of my other trash cans 35 gal was really starting to slit badly and i had to trash it " trashed a trash can" lol

anyways
im just scared to get another trash can even a brute
ive been keeping a close eye on the one i have left now i wont fill it as high as i have before either

i know these are more expensive but they are made very well
solid and thick plastic and already have a bulkhead 1" in the bottom
also the gallon reading on the side is a nice touch!

I got both of my RO/Mixing tanks for free from the water softener guy. The large plastic tanks you dump the salt in. Mine where new, but used ones will work just fine to. It's food grade plastic so you just need to clean um out

probably the dumbest question posted ever.... but....

what is the gray powered box between the trash can and the tank. does that send water back to your tank?

not a dumb question @ all
it was my old return pump from my sump a MAG DRIVE 18 " 1800 gph" pump
yep it mixes the salt and water and it also sends water from the salt water container to the sump

I've read from some reefers here that Brute trash cans may leak phosphates or something else into the water when the trash cans are used for water storage. I have no confirmation of this, and actually used Brutes for years. Perhaps I experienced more algae outbreaks as a result, but it's hard to tell.

I bought two 65 gallon poly tanks from U.S. plastics and I'm very happy with them. If you buy some poly tanks, just make sure they rated for potable water storage. That SHOULD ensure that the tanks do not leak anything into the water.

Here is a picture of mine:

There will not be enough phosphate released from a clean Brute can to be any concern over time, even if there is a tiny bit at the start (and I'm skeptical of that even). Inorganic phosphate is just not something added in large amounts to polyethylene plastic, and even if it were, it will not readily diffuse through the plastic.

Thanks. I actually use two pumps. I have the two tanks (left salt, right fresh) plumbed through the wall to my tank to a Litermeter3 and 2 remote pump modules. The Litermeter3 provides the freshwater top-off and exchanges about 3 gallons of salt water daily. You can't see the waste line from that shot, but it goes through the exterior wall to the outside, where it dumps the water. I can do up to 50 gallon water changes daily if I wanted to.

The plumbing on the bottom is connected to a GenX - PCX-55HP pump and is used for many things, including to transfer RO/DI water from the right tank to the left tank and for mixing the saltwater in the left tank. The pump is amazing and really quiet; I would not hesitate to use it as a main pump. I have other tanks in the house that are unfortunately not plumbed to these two tanks, so I also connect a long 1" hose to the Genx pump to do water changes for these tanks.

Sure. Here is an early picture of the supply and waste lines plumbed through the wall to behind the tank:

Sump area with Litermeter3 on the left:

Plumbing and the two remote pump modules inside of the cabinet:

If you look closely here at the back of the sump, you can see the three white .25" tubes, one for fresh, one for salt and one for waste:

Tank is still cycling, but here's a full tank shot from a couple of weeks ago:

If you were to place one of these tanks outside in the yard.. how would you cover it up to protect from the sunlight? I think algae would grow if it is not in a dark enough.
