I have only owned the LR and not the Eshopps. The LR has nothing but good reviews, and is considered the best. The Eshopps has mostly good reviews. Your choice.

I like the Eshopps but LOVE the Lifereef. I'm using an Eshopps on my 65g (with 55g footprint so drilling isn't a good option) while building the stand for my new 75g drilled tank. I've used multiple types and brands of external overflows over the years. The Eshopps is OK, the Lifereef is built much better/stronger and if I was planning on keeping my 65g running after the tank upgrade, I'd have gone with the Lifereef. |

how do you guys quiet your over flows? i have an eshoppes 300. i think it runs really good, but then agian its the only overflow i have ever owned. i would like to point out something though. if your levels are correct, why would it matter if your overflow stopped?
i did a test on mine, if i pull my u-tube out, the pump will only pump out what is remaining in the chamber-and thats not enough for it to spill over. on the reverse-if my pump shuts down, theres not enough in the tank for the sump to overflow.... also, when i turn my pumps off, for feeding and water changes....sometimes for over an hour, and i turn them bk on, the siphon starts all by it self. i just bought this over flow, so maybe eshoppes improved their design... also how low in the tank should i put the box...right now i have it so the bottom of the "teeth" are 1/2 to 3/4 below the water line... |

If you have a chambered sump such that the section that water is returned from doesnt have enough water to overflow the tank if the overflow siphon is broken, then you obviously dont have to worry about tank overflow. BUT ... you would have to worry about your pump running dry. Not all pumps can run dry without damage ... most probably cant. Also, not all sumps are chambered with an "isolated" return section or with a small enough return section that the tank wouldnt overflow if the overflows siphon was lost. Your siphon should NOT break when shutting down the pumps. I dont think that anyone said that Lifereef was the ONLY overflow that worked and reliably retained siphon. Just that it was the best built, properly designed and reliable U-tube type overflow. You adjust the inner box based on the desired water level in the display which is determined by personal preference and the flow rate of your return pump. If your Eshopps is working fine (and many Eshopps users have no problems at all) and retains siphon when power to your return is shut off and restored they you're fine. I've got the eshopps pf-300 on my 40 breeder, and I've been very happy with it. I've never lost siphon when the return pump is turned off. And it's made with thick acrylic and is sturdy. Best $35 I've spent on the tank in a long time.
Heyyoitsnicky raised a really good point about matching the levels between the DT and sump so you don't overflow either. |

ya dude, it takes a while, but when you get it right, it runs itself. the only water level that ever changes in my system is the chamber with the return pump. i made a peice of acrylic with makers on it and sillicaoned it to the lass so i know where to fill to, when im low, when im super full, kinda like the biocube. actually works out pretty sweet...
also i have a haleia ( i think thats how its spelled) return pump said it can run dry with no"major" problems. ha Last edited by heyyoitsnicky; 01/02/2010 at 10:26 PM. |
