Can Ich spread on nets ?
Hey Rc !
Lately I was feeding my tank through a net from reading the udea from another hobbyist on the board. I only have 1 net and I used that net when I was stupid in the beginning rushing and overstocking my tank ( disaster !! ). After that catastophe I stopped using the net and was feeding frozens from a small medicine cup. Then I switched to a net , but now I notice my fish are getting on and off Ich. Do I have to treat my fish again ? Or should I order a new net ?

It sounds to me like your DT and your fish are infested with ICH and who knows what else.

You are probably right, I should start treating now. It's not serious, at the most 4 spots but not on all fish.

What did you treat with?
Yes, a net can transfer ich, though it is not super likely (the free swimming stages would have to be in a droplette of water on the net. I would think it more likely you did not get a full kill with treatment and that your fish are stressed enough to visibly be showing some signs of ich.

I've heard (and I believe it) that allowing a net to dry in between uses kills any parasites that might be on it. There are also commercial net-dip products, but my LFS experience suggests that at least some of them don't work all that well.

I rarely use a net and if I do I always sterilize it before each use (on each livestock).
For fish, a sterilized net itself is bad enough due to physical contact. Many bacterial infections occur after contact even with a clean net, let alone a dirty one. Yes, ich can be transfered into the water, besides. A very large clear plastic bag, slowly moving, is generally the better way to capture and transfer fish, in general. Transfering fish from a large tank, especially a reef tank, is generally a major ordeal. I accept this and use a large plastic bag after much prelim work, almost always. |
