Quarantine Tank?

What is a quarantine tank for? For sick fish only or are there other useful options?

I am setting one up for fish that I will dose with copper if needed and one for coral... I will let the coral stay in the qt for 3 to 4 weeks to see it there is any bad things on it before putting in to the DT...
