I'm sure your tank would have been fine w/out power for 4 hours. Great that you were prepared tho.
I got a generator this year and havent had the opportunity to use it yet, which is a good thing. I got sick of worrying about an ice storn or whatever. It was worth the piece of mind. |

Northern Tool sells a 3500W generator which I use to power my tank (no halides), refrigerator, TV, cable box, Wii and cell phone chargers. I got it for @ $400 and it works great and always starts on one pull. I recommend them for anyone in the hobby who lives in hurricane/winter storm areas.

A drawback to a generator is that you generally need to be home to get the thing going. They're awesome for long term power outages, though. I also invested in an inverter awhile back and have it connected to a deep cycle marine battery. It would run the essentials on my 46g tank for at least 12 hours, and would kick in immediately if I lost power. My point being, don't forget an emergency "in case I'm not home" backup, even if it's just one of those battery powered air bubblers that comes on automatically if you lose power.

In the case your not home the apex controller will notify you the power is out but it has to be on a battery backup.

Good job on having a generator. I just lost everything to an ice storm here in Iowa last week. Generator will be my first purchase before setting up my tank again. Like what was said above, piece of mind.

Please make sure you dont back feed power down the line by connecting to the house wiring because the power guy putting you back in service can jet hurt. Turn off the main breaker to your house or get a transfer switch. The other option is all extension cords to a couple of items. Good Luck all
