Panorama LED Stunners and External Skimmer ?s

Ok, so I am looking to add/upgrade a few things but could use some info and advice.

First off some specs of my current setup

40 Breeder tank (sumpless/skimmerless)
4x39W Current Sundial T5HO (1 ATI Aquablue Special, 1 10K Current, 2 Current actinics)
AC 70 HOB filter running only filter floss and Chemipure Elite
2 x Koralia 2 and1 x K-nano
30+ lbs of LR

Stock is 1 B/W occelaris and 1 Potters, several LPS and 2 SPS

I am planning to upgrade my bulbs to:
1x ATI Aquablue Special
2x ATI Blue+
1x KZ Figi purple

I was also thinking about supplementing with 3 Panorama Stuuners (36" total). Not sure what color yet but thinking about the 453nm/8K combo. Will this make a difference in growth at all and/or add a shimmer to my tank or will this not be enough to make a difference over my T5's?

I am also contemplating adding a skimmer. HOB skimmers seem to have a bad rep and I cannot have a sump for fear my 2-year old son will have access to it. Can someone please explain to me how an external skimmer works. I was looking at this one but seems overpowered for my 40 breeder.
