Vortech or tunze for my tank??
the great debate for me right now... i am trying to figure out wich would be better for my tank and the way it is setup. i like both vortech and tunze but i only wanna have to buy 1 setup for my tank. i cant afford to buy both. i will be replacing 2 koralla 1's and 2 maxijet 1200's with rotating flo deflectors.
here are the specs for my tank and a picture showing how the rock work is setup. Tank: 58g oceanic RR 3ft long the rock is against the back glass but there are many holes all thruought the rock work for the fish to swim thru. the tank will stay being a mixed reef tank but i am planning on converting mainly to SPS in the near future and this is the reason for me buying the new power head/wavemaker setup. any help or advise given would be great! i am thinking about taking some rock work out here soon too. but i am really wanting to buy a vortech... problem is i cant direct the flow and am worried i have too much rock work and the way it is setup i would not get great flow in the tank. |

Don't worry about direction with a vortech. The do not need to be aimed to get good flow.
IMO I would go with the vortech. 1 mp40 should do nicely. I use both at work. I am not entirely bias but I do prefer vortech over tunze.

You could also do 2 mp10's if you wanted two pumps.

You don’t need to worry about flow direction with 2 Voltech, it covers a whole tank (125 STD) easily, well I think you have to slow it down, so you don’t get a sand storm. I love the Tunzes too, but it really looks bulky and don’t cover the whole tank as the Voltech, nevertheless realibity of the Tunze is unquestionable.

How sensitive you are to noise and how quiet your tank is overall is something to consider, the vortechs are not real loud, but the ones Ive heard are atleast if not a little bit louder than say a skimmer or light fans. As said the flow of the vortech is awesome and not being able to aim them doesnt matter. |

mp40, I would rather have too much then not enough. You can dial it back if you need to.
You might have to arrange some rockwork but I doubt it depending on how you place the pump. Food for thought, I don't want to get into the classic pump debate but... this is how it worked for me. Each time a tunze broke the entire thing needed to be sent back and it took 2 weeks. Except when it was the nanostream that shattered in my hand. That took 3 weeks. Each time a vortech broke it was the wetside and something simple that ecotech sent out with no questions. Pumps operational within the first week. IMO there have been few companies with as good of support as ecotech.

thanks again for the help here. i think i will go with the vortech mp40w and see how things go. if its too much flow i will dial it back and if im not happy with it i will sell it. it seems they sellrather quickly on here and they retain there value.

I would love to have a mp 40. Probably the best you can buy.

I got rid of my vortech and replaced with full tunze setup on my 120g, the noise of the vortech drove me crazy. I now have 2x 6055 and 2x 6045 and I love how quiet they are.. and no ugly cup sticking out of the side of my tank
