Vortech MP40 or Tunze 6105 Pump + 7091 Single Controller
I know Vortech is all the rage and it's sexy with it's wet/dry application. However, what is a better and more reliable set-up?
I've been reading allot about the Vortechs being sent in for repairs, while you never hear that about the Tunze Turbelle. I've see a lot of Vortech vids and they look sweet! Both Vortech and Tunze 7091 have many wave choices and both use a single pump. Vortech MP40 $499 (i'm in Canada) 3200 GPH Sexy wet/dry Tunze 6105 Pump + 7091 Single Controller $430 3434 GPH Takes up more room Lets here your opinions please |

I went with the tunze because of the same reasons. I thought if they sell the wet side it's obviously meant to break down here and there.

Re: Vortech MP40 or Tunze 6105 Pump + 7091 Single Controller
I would not say the wet/dry is sexy, it is a noticable difference in the tank. However, they are not silent. And while they cannot be directed like a tunze, they have a very broad flow. There are MANY threads you can search thru on these forums discussing the ups and downs.

Oceanic Corals in BC has them on sale for $440CAD. I've dealt with Oceanic corals for livestock and they are a good dependable store. nice frags.

I would email oceanic corals first to see if the sale is still on.
They are in a mad scramble to open up a retail store so they haven't been updating their site as much. You can go on canreef as well since they have a forum there. |

I've got both Tunze 6055s with a 7095 controller and MP40w Gen 2 pumps. Bottom line they're both great pumps and both companies have great customer service.
What do you want pumps with a more concentrated flow pattern that is aim able or pumps with a broad gentler flow and great undertow? If I went with just one it would be MP40 for the undertow and broad flow. No the spare wet side is not a sign of failure. It allows you to swap a wet side for cleaning and maintenance while still having a functional pump at fraction of the price of owning a spare pump. |

I guess if you can stand the noise or do not mind that your pump may potentially have more problems than the tunzes then go with ecotech....
Both are good pumps. Obviously the tunze is much more quiet but you can get some nice patterns from the tunze as well. I haven't experimented as much with the 7096 and I would disagree about the quality of flow being better from ecotech. You can get a broad flow pattern by replacing the 6105 covers with 6205 covers and alternating flow with the controller settings. The look of a vortech IMO without wires is nicer than a tunze in tank but when your tank is all grown out you won't notice and I think that's what we all aim for. I would go on the tunze forums...There are nice tanks with vortechs and tunzes..what matters is consistent water quality proper lighting and good flow and you can't go wrong with either one. It's a matter of personal preference. I like the tunzes over vortech for: (1) Reliability (2) Quiet operation (3) Ability to direct or point the flow (4) You can experiment with different settings on the 7096. It's much more customizable than the vortech (But again look at the tunze forums. I don't have as much experience with the 7096) |
