external pumps
is there any advantage to going with a external pump?

That depends on your situation. I've been told external pumps are more reliable. They will put less heat into the water, which can be good or bad. Generally, I have to pay for electricity to heat my tank, so having the pump in the water is good. Personally, I wouldn't worry excessively over the issue, since both types of pumps can work very well.
Are you interested in fine-tuning, or worried about a major difference?

Externals tend also to be more powerful and can handle higher head pressure.

im just shopping for a return pump for my 90. i was going to go with a eheim 1260 but wanted to way my options.
