I definitely think so. However, having a refugium more complex than growing chaeto is something of a debate IMO.

Fug = more water volume = easier to maintain levels in tanks.
Fug = Place to grow macro algae
Fug = plave to grow pods
Fug = good thing

Depends on what you want from your tank. What do you want?

Vince if you have the space / money add a fuge
Remember to not skimm the flow from the fuge if you want to grow pods.

Help me out

Some folks say put a T on your return to feed the fuge I don't my mine always comes from the over flow from the DT. My thoughts are if th water quality is good enough on the main then the same water goes into the fuge so it should be good enough. Always has been for me.

vince, you do NOT need a refugium. PLENTY of people do without, and have phenominal tanks.

Not saying it won't be good, as it has TONS of benefits, but it is NOT NEEDED.

As to a BASIC sump, I will post it for you here. This is VERY BASIC, but it is FINE for a sump/fuge.

I agree with Chiefsurfer. The simple answer is "no, you don't need a refugium". It can certainly provide many benefits, so if you can do it, I would. As far as the argument on whether the refugium should get pre or post skimmed water, I really don't think it makes that much difference. There isn't a skimmer in the world that's 100% efficient, so the water coming out of the skimmer should have plenty of nutrients to keep your algae and plankton perfectly happy.

IMO, I want ALL of the pods that come out of the fuge to go into my tank for the fish and corals to feed on. My skimmer comes before the fuge.
