Something is wrong with my coral

My new leather coral is going through the acclimation process right now and I notices on its foot that there is something that looks like diatoms or an infection on the foot of the coral what can I do?

I can't tell what that is or if it is normal, but there are some dips (Reef Dip, Coral ReVive, etc) used to prevent bacterial infections. I just don't know if they would be any good if the coral already has an infection (assuming it is an infection).

Hopefully someone else knows what it is and if it is normal or not.

Both of my leathers are similar to yours. I think the foot just gets a differen texture since thats the point that sticks to the substrate both in your tank and in the ocean. IMO it is just from streching and growing while it is attached to a surface....that and when its ripped away from its surface when collected. If you post a clearer pic I may be able to be more definitive

Is it black or brown?

Black is bad. Suck it off.

Brown is usually fine and will shed off over time.

It is brown, this is the best pic I can get of it in its position and my camera is not ment for takeing aquarium shots (do you think it could just be the coral shedding its skin because at the pet store it wasnt like that a week ago.

I have a healthy, thriving devil's hand leather and it's foot is discolored in the exact same way as yours right where it attaches to the rock. I also noticed that between the first and second picture you have gotten some polyp extension. I'd say your coral looks healthy and is going to do just fine, just don't poke and prod at it too much, they hate that.

It is an infection now! It has a few black spots on the brown part of the foot and now on the healthier side of the coral it appears to have a rip in the side, I will try to get a picture of it soon.

I recently had a kenya tree shrink up and get black spots after months of healthy growth. Finally, it perked up again and then I noticed 3 new frags around my tank - seems like it was self-propagating! It is fine now, and so are all the babies.

if its healthy and opening well just let it heel. if it looks infected and receding try lugols or revive. if still receding i would try fragging that side off

I'm going to have to get rid of the coral because the infection has spread all over the coral the only part of it that is unmarked are the polyps so I'm thinking I'm going to have to through it away. It seems to just continue to decompose. How should I get rid of it, just put it in a plastic bag and place it in the garbage?

There goes 50 dollars.

try to frag it with a sharp razor blade and throw away the necrotic tissue. This should at least save you some of the coral to start a new colony with. It could probably help to keep in a higher flow area as well. Its pretty common to see lots of different types of Algae and sponges growing on the base of leathers.

Leathers are very hardy. Really don't think anything is wrong with your leather. Make sure that your water parameters are within range.
