I would recommend only red scarlets... true red scarlets. There are any billed as such, and are not.
They are the most docile of the hermits. I broke down and put 2 in my 120. I don't trust crabs in general. In one of my previous tanks, I had 'reef safe' red leg hermits... About 10. I ended up with one big one, and then he started going after other things. Ate all my snails, and, I suspect, 2 gobies. Here's a link to true red scarlets: http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merch...ory_Code=Crabs

How big is your tank?
You'll want to wait until the cycle has completed before you add hermits or any other invert. I personally LOVE hermits, and have them in both my tanks. They do periodically kill snails though, and they climb all over corals. My favorite is the Electric Blue hermits - they're big, mine are an inch or more. The Scarlet Reds and also the tiny Blue ones also behave well in my system.

for about two weeks. The ammonia goes from.25 to 2.0 ( the high was 8.0 in the beginning) depending on the day and my nitrites are staying at .25 and my nitrates are are 0

I would think you'd want it to cycle for another few weeks. I put in rock that in an established tank for 2 years, and it's been 2 to 3 weeks. thanks to the nice rock I got from a well established tank, my , nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia are all zero. All the test kits showed clearly zero for everything. Ph is at 8.2. Perfect setup. And I still don't plan on putting in crabs until I retest at the end of this week.. Then I might just get some more snails and just one or two crabs to test things out.

I would wait for ammonia to go down to 0.
What filtration are you running?

ok I will try this. I have a trickle filter(oceanicv 250 plus) that was never completely dry before I got it and I have a DAS skimmer. There is a very weird area in the back of my tank that holds water and it had about six inches of water in it when I got it and the algea never died that was in it. I have tried and tried to figure out what it is and I was told it was more them likely someone had to much money and designed my tank. It is not a dutch system. sorry if I mispelled things

Personally, I'd wait a few more weeks. Then do a partial water change & test water. When ammonia is at 0, then add CUC. In the meantime, read, read, read & get as much info as you can...
I'm partial to scarlet leg hermits, tho I have some little blue legs in my tank too. Scarlets aren't as aggressive. Good luck! Last edited by SwampyBill; 02/23/2010 at 06:48 PM. |
