RKL wavemaker not random, still good for alternating flow?

I'm using a few mj's on a RKL in my prop tank and display to try and create some alternating current. The RKL allows you to set timer a and timber b for alternating on/off cycles. This really doesn't create a true random wave pattern similar to other wavemakers does it? I'm guessing I'll have more dead spots and am not sure if maybe I should pick up a cheap natural wave strip for a more random flow.
