What the he!! kind of crab is this???

I have been watching this crab in my tank for the last week or so. I think it came in with some rock that a coral was attached to. Today he was on a rock that I could catch him in. I assume I dont want him in my tank. I spared him his life for the moment. Any info would be appreciated!

i agree with the gator, we call them rock crabs. No you don't want it in your tank. Watch your fingers.

Keep him out of the display tank, as said above.

Nice sump monster. Kinda heavy bioload though. Might make an interesting tankmate for a mantis shrimp.

Would he be safe to keep in the fuge? I have a ton of cheato, DSB with mud underneath and some live rock. The only fish in there would be sand sifters. I could also put it in the skimmer sump which has a bunch of live rock as well.

Only reason I question if I should put him in the sump is because between the filter socks and the alpha 300, he might starve! Not sure whats a worse fate though since I did have a steak knife in my hand in case I couldn't pry him out the rock alive.

Though im not 100% on the topic, I would not place him with anything living. If it is a stone crab, they eat crusteations, unless you remove both claws in which case they will become herbovourous (thats probably not a word!). Be careful with the claw though, I go fishing for them down here in FL, they are mean little buggers and strong!!!
