To be honest If he dosen't want to spend the money for a Koralia then maybe he should get out of the hobby, As It Is an exspensive hobby to be sucessful at and If you can't justify a pewerhead that Is dirt cheap. I say get a Goldfish! JMHO

yes, i would say more flow like everyone else. you have mentioned he changes the water with RO/DI. do you know how old is the filter media? did he ever replace the filter? when he change the water, did he move the tube around the tank or just one spot? if only one spot i don't think he takes out enough old water. Just my 02 cents.

What?? Are you saying that moving the siphon hose around the tank will remove more "old water" than keeping it in one place? So If I put the hose on the bottom of the tank, I'll only remove "bottom water"? I think you'll remove the same amount of "old water" no matter where the hose is.

that would make sense however with as little flow as the tank has, there might be areas with more unwanted nutrients, but its quite unlikly on such a small scale

IME diatoms and detritus are best removed via skimmer and filter floss, when i purchased my current tank used, i didnt understand why cleaning the sand was so important, untill i added the sand and began filling, i stopped at about half full and ran the skimmer andfilter floss on the skimmer output for a few days switching the floss every time flow got too restricted,

but honestly it sounds like your buddys tank has little to no form of nutrient export, any way to pull the nutrients out will improve the tanks condition
and of course increasing circulation

there are little of movement in the tank. if you are not moving around when you do water change try to vacumm some of the rock pockets where there are a lot of stuffs just sitting around. that with water change together might help. putting the hose in one spot will remove the water yes, temporary because all the trash still there. they are not floating around in the tank too much.

Your right, but I did get him to purchase some chaeto when we hit that new reef place. He has no refugium but I told him to put it in his display tank in hope to get some sort of export going on.

Make sure he is using good Ro/Di water, try cutting back the lighting period for a little bit, and lastly invest in a good number of hermits, snails.

I tried to do this for a friend and ended up 1 less friend. Eventually my answers were not good enough for him. He wanted the tank to be as easy to run as mine was to look at. It could be totally different but over 6 months a 5 year friendship was lost in my scenario... unfortunate and out of my control. Should have never helped set up a tank for him until he proved he was willing to learn what to do not be told what to do.
