Changing Aquarium Filtration/Setup
Right now I have a 20g frag tank with a (IMO) horrible setup. I just never works how i want it to. So obviously im sick of dealing with it and i want to change it. I have a 20g tank which drains into a 10g sump. The problem i am having is with the water draining down into the sump. I have a custom setup which i though would be awesome but frankly it just takes up room and sometimes i just want to hit it as hard as possible to let out my anger. Alright so i have 1" pvc going down into my sump in a weird formation. Look at the picture for details. The pipe on the right is going down. The system is basically a suction system, the tube that leads to no-where is an open tube which allows for the suction to occur without spilling everywhere. The reason i am so mad is that i can never get the amount of water going down to match the amount of water going up without working on if for a LONG time. This is because i am stupid and put a restrictor on the pipe going down which i was later told not to do...OOPS!! Well whenever i open it all the way the water goes down way to fast and stirs up my refugium and just makes a big mess! So after working on it for days the water going down/up finally becomes even. But then when i add top off water it goes all out of wack. I pour my top off water into the top tank and of course it somehow ends up in the bottom tank. I know this sounds crazy but thats how it works. And dont even get me started on water changes. Whenever i do a water change i have to stop the flow of water. Well when i am done changing the water the water going down/up gets all out of wack again and i have to work on it FOREVER. SOOOOO ANYWAYS....after that long speal?? I WANT TO CHANGE MY SETUP. i know for sure that i want to take off the pipe that goes into the sump. so i want some ideas on how i should setup a new one that works perfectly. i dont know if i should use a HOB or if i should drill my tank. The only problem i would have with drilling my tanks would be that it is already running and i dont know i would go about doing this without my coral getting hurt. So any suggestions are welcome on how i can re-do my aquarium setup. thanks so much!
