Can't believe it's nearly been a year since my last post. Work has kept me extremely busy to the point where I just feed the fish, clean the skimmer cup, clean the glass and top off whenever i hear that annoying gurgling sound from the return pump.
But I had enough of it, resigned and now am off for around a month till I start the new job... and with so much time on my hands i decided to redecorate the house and the best part is im starting a new tank ![]()

what a strange turn of events! So why did you decide to go smaller?

just to ease my life a bit more I guess, maybe another mistake I'm making. I received it yesterday evening though 3 hours late. Cabinet is made entirely out of some form of plastic so I should have less problems than with the current stand.
Today will be a long day: Have to move everything to my 55G Empty and clean the 210G and all the equipment Repaint the wall behind where the tank used to sit. Resize the light canopy, don't know how long that will take. Place the new tank and fill ... OR I may just wait till 2010 have eeything sit there and just go dive today.

so here is the very simple sump I'm having made, should accomodate my skimmer and the return pump. Ill hook up the osmolator also. I sold off my calcium reactor last week.

Hey Nick, do you really feel you need the baffles? Or both baffles? My concern is that it is so darn hard to clean between them and that just one may be enough to force bubbles to the surface anyway. It seems that we have been programmed to build sumps with all sorts of baffles, boxes, etc., but IMO all that does is limit space, limit the size of any equipment, limit flexibility, and make it much more difficult to keep clean.
In th ecase of your sump (nice sketch BTW), where your return pump draws from the bottom, wouldn't just one baffle to the bottom that forces water over the top be enough?

Wouldn't be better to force water under since the bubbles rise?

Not the way I see it. If you force the water under, won't some bubbles go with it? This is why "traps" became so popular, but I think with some testing, you could come up with something better. For me, all they trap is crap. If there is enough horizontal movement, then water and bubbles would go over th etop. The bubbles stay on top and pop. Then you draw from the bottom.
Some people do away with the baffle completely and just have the water run from the tank pipe into a submerged bucket, which forces all the bubbles to th esurface, then again, drawing return water from down low. With the space allowed for mine, I just have two sumps connected by pipes down low, so that does mirror your suggestion Gabriel, in that most of the bubbles go to the top. Because of the size I have sump-wise, I get zero bubbles back into the display, even though I have water cascading into my "return" side sump. But I digress. Size does matter, and another very effective measure is to have the water pass through a filter floss shelf, giving some mechanical filtration while breaking up th eair bubbles. Again, I only comment because the original design looks to me like it will be very difficult to clean and keep detritus out of it.

it's actually over and under, the only reson I'm keeping two baffles is to be able to place some filter floss and force the water through for mechanical filtration and presumably less bubbles coming into the last compartment. Originally i was going to go with just one.

I would start a new one since it isn't really a 180 g fishbowl anymore.

In the photo above with the blue tang it looks like there is a surface film on the water that is probably inhibiting gas exchange/oxygenation.
I thinks some more turbulence on the surface would help with that. Also if you have good relectors for your 400 MH's with lenses there is no need for a canopy unless you intend to keep jumpers. If you go with 14K bulbs you will not need any actinics.
