Silent Skimmer options

Hello guys,

I'm looking for a silent skimmer..

I thought about two options:

- Royal Exclusive Alpha 170

- Elos NS500

Which one is better, considering quality and silence?

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

skimmerless

Seriously, none are all that quiet due to venturi sucking in air- pumps are louder with air going through them.

jme, although I've not tried these 2 models.

No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.”

Current Tank Info: 56g, 20g.

The alphas are dead silent. The red dragon pumps are dead silent. I have never owned an elos skinner, but I have heard that they are really finicky.
What size tank is this for? If it for anything less than 125g I would suggest a smaller skimmer. The necks are so large on the 170s so u need a lot of organics to get a consitant foam head.

+1

Not good for small tanks.

If your tank is more like a 75 -90 range go with a ATB 840. They are very very quite and have smaller necks so do better on smaller systems.

This is what I would go for if the tank is under 125
Bubble king 160
Atb 840
I-tech 200

For cheaper skinmers i would go for
Swc 160 cone
Bubble magnus nac7

Hello !

The tank is the same size as a Elos 70 tank.

It has 70 gallons.

I have one Octopus Extreme 160 but the noise is really loud.

I'll explain why I want to change it: I'm from Brazil and in one month I'm going to New York.

A used Octopus EXT 160 here worth around 600-700 dollars.

So, if I sell it, I have the opportunity to get a better skimmer. I know the EXT 160 is a great skimmer but I can't support the noise.

The ATB 840 has the same noisy pump that the Extremes has.. probaly I'll have the same problem, am I right?

No one for Elos?

The Bubble King Mini 160 is smaller than alpha 170?

Thanks!

I would just pass on the elos.
The bk 160 is a lot smaller than the alpha. The alpha would be way overkill.
The atb pump is different than a regular sicce. It is called the mini-airstar. The pump has a custom volute that prevents rotational issues. Thy also seem quiter than the stock sicce's like the one on your msx skimmer.
This would be skimmers that I would go for.
High end
Bubble king mini 160
Medium end
I-tech 100
Loss end but a great skimmer.
Swc 160 cone

I would save your money and go with the Swc 160 cone. It will perform just as well as high end skimmers listed for a fraction of the price. Pm me if you want the website where you buy the 160 cone from. I would post up here but mode would close the thread because they dont sponsor reefcentral.

Complete silence.... i would suggest the SWC 160 cone. Thats what i have, i can not even hear this skimmer run even with the stand doors open. The only way i know it is still running is i see the bubbles in the skimmer body.

+1 for the SWC160 cone. Can't hear mine. Such a big change from my last that sometimes I find myself checking in the sump to see if it's still working
