Which koralias to use?

I decided to go with koralia powerheads on my 180 build since they have good reviews and won't break the bank. Question is which ones to go with?

The tank is a 180 gallon that will eventually hold sps and a few lps maybe softies and clams. I'm thinking of using somewhere between the koralia 6's and 8's based on their flow, but can't decide which to go with as I have no experience with koralia's at all. Need some guiding wisdom.

Thank you

How much flow are you looking to achieve?

Well that I'm not sure about. I want enough flow to keep sps in without blasting them to death which is another reason I like the koralia brand they have a wide flow

According to www.hydorkoralia.com, two magnum 7s are best to be used with your size of tank. That may be a little much with your size of tank. I have seen some nice sps tanks ran off of the tunze 6065 which are quite a bit small flow rates. I think the mag7 koralia should be more than enough though.

I had 4 mag 6s on my 175 and my sps grew well. Given the external dimensions are the same, I say go for the 8s. If you plan to place the tank on a wall, they are a pain to pull off and clean unless you silicone the magnets to the back of the tank before you fill it--that way you can just unplug and remove.

in a 180 IMO 2 should be plenty. They send flow down all 10' of my tank with no problem. I'm only using 4 and a couple mag 4's on my 750.

If you have a good amount of sps I say get 4 mag 8s and a redsea wavemaker...here's my 175 with 4 mag 6s which have now turned to 4 mp40s...

koralias all on the back (right one out of pic)

I second the four powerhead idea so you can cover most areas of your tank.

Mag 8 is a beast, if you are going to run 4 of them you are going to get A LOT of flow.

I know they're beasts (3250gph) that's why I'm wondering if maybe the 8's will be too much, but I don't want to get 7's and end up wishing I got 8's. I guess I could always sell the 8's if I wanted to downgrade. Probably better to go bigger now. Thanks to all of you for your help

Just out of curiousity.. I heard using a wavemaker with the mag powerheads wears them out faster because of the on/off patterns. Is that true and by how much are we talking?

I don't think this is a problem on the magnum series. It is for the original nano & 1-4 (I think).

I would get the low voltage versions and Hydor's wave maker controller.

Not a problem with the Mag & New Eco power heads. The old ones had issues with the start/ stop, but they now have a new shaft with out the spacing..

You could actually use 2 Magnum 8's on the ends and use the Magnum 7's on the back panel.
