Flow Question

I have a 40g breeder made into a reef tank. I have an over flow the flows into a wet/dry that I've converted into a sump/fuge.

I have a mag 7 in my fuge as my return pump.

I also have a maxi-jet 1200 in my 40g display for flow as well.

Is this enough?

Is this too much?

I am keeping softies and LPS mainly. I have a birdsnest colony in there as well.

Thanks.

a Maxijet 1200 can be a little strong for a 40gallon. We had one in a 56gal tall and it was too much flow and just blasted everything in its path. We ended up taking it out and using two smaller pumps to get some water moving over the lower corals and sand.

My opinion it can be used at the top of the tank if it's not in the path of the corals but it's not doing that much for the corals.

You have about 20 turn water changes an hour when you factor in head pressure loss. That will be fine for the corals you have, it will be a little low if you start growing SPS in any number.

Well, I have two maxi jet 1200's in my 28 nano. In addition I have a 350 gph Tunze pump running into the tank from my sump/refugium. Yes, you need to be careful where you point the returns, but if I can run two of them and another 350 GPH pump in my 28, I am certain you could figure out how to run one in your 40 gallon tank. The Mag 7 is obviously going to be more of a problem than the Maxi-Jets. I would split the Mag 7 returns to two outlets.

I have my maxi-jet 1200 blowing on an angle upward so it creates ripples in the water for gas exchange on the surface of the tank. The same with my return from the mag 7.

What did you mean by a problem with the mag-7? Is it not big enough?

I think he meant the mag 7 flows more than your maxijet. Also the maxijets aren't too powerful for a 40g just aim it to where it's not kicking everything around.

The Mag 7 is pretty darn big for a 40 gallon. I use a Mag 3 in my 75, which is admittedly small, but it's what I had to work with and it's OK so far.

You might wanna try and split the flow from the Mag. Spread it out around the whole tank.
