GE Silicone II Kitchen & Bath?

I was at Lowe's and the only clear silicone they had was the GE Silicone II Kitchen & Bath. What are the effects of using this for installing baffles in 150g FOWLR? Also, if the reason for not using it is because it leaches out, how long would it take for it to leach all of the bad stuff out?

I'm not sure, but you have to make sure that it is NOT mildew resistant. Personally, I use GE Silicon 1 Window and Door.

I have used both I and II but make sure that it is for windows and doors as the kitchens and bathrooms ahve the mold inhibitors and could effect your critters.

That's what I am wondering. What effects would there be?

mildew inhibitor is antibacterial.
It'll wipe out your beneficial bacteria.

It is only meant to keep the mildew out of the silicone. Is there really enough to kill all of the bacteria in a tank with a total volume of about 200 gallons?

According to some people it is fine once it cures.
Also if that is the only silicone that LOWES had, then that is a horrible LOWES.
Try Home Depot.

Not sure but that is something that I wouldn't risk anyway. The GE I windows and doors is only like $4 a tube the GEII W & D is $6. Piece of mind is worth a lot more. the 4 or 6 bucks.

well, I used a good amount of silicone 2 (windows and doors) on a large system and for the past month I have been getting readings of trace .025 trite (salifert) in an established system I added on to, not enough to effect most corals but sps arent happy. Be safe and go with silicone 1 or spend the money on 'aquarium" sealant

If you're planning to use a lot, here's a good price on aquarium silicone glue at petscentral:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7755979366

I only use the GE brand for sealing windows, doors and the inside bottom edges of my aquarium stand.

I used GE silicon II windows and doors for my sump and have had no problems. My SPS, LPS are doing just fine.

Hmm, looks like it could be an issue with batches or the amount you use. Silicone I is the safe bet

I have found that the aquarium silicone is kept by the glues in lowes, I also saw some stuff that is made by goop that was specific to aquarium type applications, and was quick drying. I haven't been in the hobby that long to know the difference, so I wouldn't chance it with anything other than 100% pure silicone.

I used the window and doors silicone II on 4 baffles in a 20g long sump. My tank went south in less than two days. Lost xenia and yellow tang. Coral Beauty in real bad shape. I can't prove that pvc or acrylic wasn't source of contamination.

why do people insist on using GE Silicone cause its cheap??? i take no chances when it comes to aquriums! too much time and money invested!!! invest the extra cash and buy stuff that is clearly marked aqurium safe!!!

why even question it if people are telling you not to use GEII? Go ahead and use it and post back once you have killed everything. People recommend GEI for a reason, thats because someone who didnt research used GEII and wiped out their tank. You know people say dont use it, and you are still trying to use it. use it
