Finished with sump, but have two problems!

Hey guys,

Just finished plumbing my sump and it works great!!! Man, I'm excited!!

I have two problems:

1) Marineland put a siphon hole in a stupid place in the return line. It sits above the water and it sounds like someone is peeing real loud.
2) In my sump I have a gurgling noise coming out of the drain. I have the durso stand pipes. Could the hole be to small in the top?

Hope you guys can help me get this knocked!

If all goes well I am getting Rock and substrate tomorrow!!!!

Sincerely
Hardcore reefer in the making! lol

the siphon hole needs to be above the water, so when the power goes out your water drains from the lines and the pump wont overflow your sump.

try putting airline tubing in the holes.. make sure they stay out of the water..also be sure to test it makes sure it still breaks the siphon...

You can adjust that ANTI-siphon hole so that it sits just under the water line to quite things down, just make sure that when you turn the pump off (to mimic a power outage) that your sump can hold that excess water.

The gurgling in the sump is because your drain is below the water line, raise it out of the water (just above the water line) and i will stop gurgling. You'll still here the water draining but it won't be as bad as the gurgle.

Any techniques to quieting you sump?

I can not adjust the Anti siphon hole so I need to fix that some how.

So move the drain line just above the water line?

Everything has been "flood tested" already.

I don't know much about the Marineland tanks, but I do know that the anti-siphon hole should be just below the waters surface, so you don't get noise and splashing.
If you can't adjust it lower, I'd suggest using something to plug the existing hole, like a nylon or plastic screw and drilling a new hole 1/2" to 1" below the water line and try and drill it so the hole has a angle downwards.
Alot of the time when someone complains about the gurgleing from the drain, the return pump is too strong.
What size pump and what size tank and drains?

I siliconed some air tubing into the Anti siphon hole. Hope that fixes that problem.

The tank is a 65gallon and the drain is 1" pvc. The pump is an ehiem 1260 which is rated around 635gph.

I do run my drain underwater so should I cut it shorter like someone else suggested?

The eheim is a excellent pump and might be at the top of the normal range for return flow.
I like to keep my drains under water, just to keep the splashing down.
Sometimes what works for one doesn't work well for another.
I've read where people will run the drain lines all the way to the bottom of the sump and put a tee on the end so the water has 2 outlets to come out of.
I haven't tried it, just remember reading about it and how it helped someone else.

I tried to understand why the drain is making the noise, but I can't.

Its like every half second or so a bubble comes out of the drain line and makes the "bloomp" sound. Imagine a hot tub and the sound it makes when the bubbles rise and break the surface.

The bubble is caused by air correct? I also hear a sucking sound coming from the top of my durso standpipe. Could it be the air hole is too small?

I will try the tee. It may help.

What do you think about these alternatives:

Cap the drain line and drill a crap load of holes so the water has multiple places to come out.

or

Tee it off like mfinn suggested?

I think the air hole is too small. sounds like it is flushing, which is a condition usually created when the air hole is too small.

I prefer to not have a hole. I put the return line just under the water line and make sure my sump can handle the water until the return line breaks siphon naturally.

^^ What he said. Try making the hole in your durso a little bit bigger and see if that helps your problem. I had to adjust my durso air hole a couple times untill it good to go.

Would I hear flushing in the sump? The actual drain does not make any noise, its just when the water comes out of the drain in the sump.

If I accidently make the hole too big in the durso standpipe then what happens? Will it drain loud?

The tank is in my room so noise is a big deal. I appreciate you guys trying to help me figure this out.
