Two quick questions. help!
so my dad's tank has been setup for a little over a year now. its been great! no crashes only a few dead fist and for 5 months or so he has one pressing problem cyano. and its been bad! and we are wondering what we can do because is in the main living room and people ask "why is there mold on the sadbed" and is a long story.
Another question is that we just did a huge clean up and we scrubbed the powerheads witch are starting to incrust with Coraline and we really like the way it looks and its been to days now and all of the corline has bleached and it looks ugly. we did not change the placing of any of them what going on! |

I've found the cyano on the sand is typically from lack of flow in that area.
As for the bleaching, that can be expected when exposing to air. I thought it was really strange as well. I only had the powerheads out of the water for around 30 seconds, yet after putting them back in they turned white. 1 week later they are turning green, supposedly after turning green they will go back to purple. The weird thing is I have other powerheads that have been out of water for weeks and they are still purple, they only seem to turn white after putting them back in the water. Just the way it reacts I guess. Give it time, it's supposed to come back. |

Cyano can be related to flow but also nutrient levels and lighting.
Even though your nitrates my look low, the cyano may be using them all up. I would triple you water change schedule for several months and see if it doesn't make a big dent in it. You need to bring down nutrient levels.
