Peaceful "filler" fish
Hey guys,
new to the hobby and just wondering if you can recommend some nice bright colored, small "filler fish to help give the tank a complete look. Must be reef safe and compatible with most other fish. So far stock consists of: Tangs, Clowns, foxface, anthias, goby, 1 small damsel.. Thanks. |

What size tank do you have? And their are plenty of schooling fish that can give a tank that extra touch. All depends on your system though. Blue/Green Chromis are great fish.

I'm a fan of the chromis as well. They'll at least taste just about anything that fits in their mouth if you give it to them. Very easy to care for. The down side is the damsel might bully the chromises until one of them is dead. The same goes for any other small, peaceful fish. You'll need to keep a close eye on them. The name devilfish is a well deserved nickname for damsels...

That's plenty of room to add some color. Have you considered a wrasse? They come in a pretty wide variety of colors and sizes and are fun to watch as they weave in and out of the rockwork. I hear coral beauty angels are usually (though not always) reef safe too. I plan to put one in my new reef system for a splash of color soon.

I agree on the damsel. If you can catch him I would trade him in for some Chromis or a wrasse. Both are great fish but a school would have the "filler" effect your looking for.

I really like anthias although they aren't the "easiest" fish to care for. Chromis are great, and cheap. I have four in my tank and their blue definately adds a color to the tank that isn't that common on other fish.

I have 3 green chromis in my 50 and the larger one is always chasing the smaller ones around and nipping them.
they still school together most of the time and are always out and active. Mine eat like piranhas. If i was to get them again i would get at least 5 or 7 and put them in a larger thank. yours would be a good size for a small school. |

I have 2 green chromis in my 125 and they are great! Anyone know if you can add more chromis after you already have some in the tank for awhile?

I really like green chromis, but I've had a hard time keeping them. How long are they lasting for you guys? I can't keep them more than a year or two. All the other fish (hepatus tang, marine betta, tomato clown & yellow watchman goby) in my tank are 7 - 8 years old, but I can't seem to keep chromis.
