Question oxygen stones

i have a 5.5 gallon tank with a small filter that has activated carbon and filter cotton. a local aquascaper told me that i should add an oxygen rock along the back of the tank to make a wall of bubbles and better oxygenate the water. is there any actual purpose to this other than it being aesthetically pleasing? also, could the water be over-oxygenated and prevent my fish from swimming in the areas that the oxygen stone would be filling with bubbles?

thanks for your time... i know that this is a somewhat rookie question.

Air bubbles are great for a fresh water system but not for a saltwater tank. Surface agitation is a better way of giving your tank the oxygen.

No, not really IMO .

In marine aquariums they tend to cause more work and problems then they do benefits. The amount of oxygen actually absorbed from the bubbles is insignificant and an airstone tends to create a terrible mess from salt creep/spray as well as a "cloudier" display from millions of microbubbles. A small powerhead pointed at the surface of the water provides just as much benifit (if not more) without nearly the mess of an airstone.
