nano skimmer that will let the top close
Hello there. I've been lurking for a while, but never actually posted.
I'm in the process of setting up my first saltwater tank, it's currently finishing up its cycle with live rock and sand. It's a 20H tank with a couple of koralia nanos, an eheim ecco canister filter with in-line heater and currently an AquaticLife Internal Mini Skimmer 115. There is no sump. And the tank is set up in my bedroom. Oh, it also has a 24" 2x65w Coralife with Lunar light PC fixture on it. And I do realize i may not even need a skimmer for a 20G tank...but for some reason i really want one... But anyway, the problem is that the skimmer needs to be fairly quiet. I can mostly deal with the humming noise coming out of the AquaticLife now that i did the "mod" for the air intake sucking noise. But because of the skimmer I cannot close the glass lid, or any other sort of lid...and furthermore, it forces me to push the lights all the way to the front of the tank. I was looking into other ways to cover the tank (custom cut plexiglass, egg crate?), or other skimmers that will allow me to close the top. So far I've looked into BakPak 2R, AquaC Remora and I tried Tunze 9002 (briefly, as it was huge). I also like the Eshopps PSK-75H, but I'm not sure if it will be too long for a 20H tank (16" height) Noise is the biggest concern, price is second. Say under $200..give or take a little? |

So after a day or so with the piece of floss mod, I ended up taking it out.
It was great to get rid of the sucking noises...but I feel that it wasn't really skimming anymore or at least as well. It was almost clear, as opposed to at least slightly brown. Not that I can expect much of anything on a system with virtually no bio load. So I ended up unplugging the skimmer overnight. My room became dead silent, and I slept real well....for a change So I'm on to find a quieter skimmer. Is this un-realistic? I'm leaning towards an in-line or an hob skimmer. I would still like to be able to put the glass top over the tank to avoid evaporation. Will this cause the tank to heat up more? The good thing about internal skimmers is in the even of a power outtage, you don't need to start it up again...I don't think that would be the case with say the EShopps HOB. I should probably invest in a UPS system, to keep the heater and powerheads plugged into...and probably the canister filter, considering my heater is in-line from it. Any suggestions? And any suggestions for a bedroom-quiet HOB or in-line skimmer? ~$200 |
