proper/eco-friendly way of disposing of Live Sand?
I have just finished moving from a 46g to a 72g and bought new LR/LS for the 72 so I could take my time transferring all my inhabitants from one to the other.
I now have a 46g (sold the LR) with nothing but water and LS in it that I am tearing down, and am wondering what the best/most environmentally friendly way to dispose of the live sand is? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

i like the option above. worst case, fill a low spot in your yard, let nature take over. its not biologic hazard, no biggie.

OR put it back on the beach
OR put it in the compost bin. |

Thanks all for the ideas, I think I am going to dump it on a dead spot in the yard.
I would give it away, but it has been sitting in the tank with nothing but water and a HOB power filter for a few weeks, so I hesitate to give it to anyone I like!! |

DO NOT put it on the beach!!!!!!! NOTHING that has been in your tank should ever be "put back" in the ocean! You will introduce unknown non native organisms to an area that has enough problems already. Either give it away to another reefer, or rinse well, let it dry out, and add it to your flower beds/veggie garden. If you lived up here (snow world) you could do like I have done in the past - save it for winter and toss it on the ice to prevent your falling on your behind.

Billdogg,
I have read that that is a BAD thing to do, that and I am pretty sure it's illegal, at least here in Florida. The thought of returning nature to nature had crossed my mind and has since been flushed out with many other silly idea covered brain cells! It's going in the back yard, and will soon be covered with lawn clippings and such! Thanks for making that point clear to anyone who reads this post, and I repeat: DO NOT put it on the beach!!!!!!! |

I think that would be a tough hunt now as the week of freezing (26!) temps in January wiped out the large part of the python population.
I hear tar balls are going to be in season here shortly, with no permit required! (I know that's not funny but I couldn't resist!) |
