Live sand or crushed coral???
We started out with a 12 gallon nano, and have over several years moved to a 56 gallon. The 12g had live sand, next we had a 24g which we used crushed coral, we than merged everything into a 34 gallon Red Sea with live sand. We have now purchased a 56 gallon which everything in the RSM will be moved to it. We are wondering which is better, crushed coral or live sand. Any help will be appreicated.

Most will say the live sand for the shifter critters you will probably get. I have a minture of sand and crushed coral in mine and it works well.

most definitely live sand.. crushed coral just creates problems in the long run.. nitrate factory.

crushed coral has never been a nitrate factor for me, but one thing i must agree through experience is that, crushed coral will not stay as white as sand. The crushed coral will be covered in algae and coraline algae. In a way your sand bed might look like tiny pieces of live rock later on. I think you're better off with the sand.

Crushed coral is the devil.
Go with sand and do not buy the bagged "live sand". That stuff is a ripoff. Buy the dry stuff next to it and it will become live in no time with good quality live rock. |

I have a bag of special grade sand sitting next to my tank so when I break it down next week I can remove my crushed coral and add the sand. I have had problems with algae and syno bacteria and hope this does the trick.
