Sump - Marineland or AGA? Quieter?
I'm trying to put together a 90g build. 48x18x24. Trying to compare systems between Marineland and AGA. Any advice concerning the pros and cons between the 2 systems would be helpful.
I really want a quiet system. I've heard rumors that the AGA system is noisy but then I hear the same rumors about the Marineland system. (This is starting to feel like the tug of war between Microsoft fans and Linux fanatics... ) I also really want a good system. It seems that the AGA sump may actually perform better (only from what I've read) because it uses a dripping mechanism. What do you think? Are the Marineland sumps just as good? Thank you in advance!! ~Mia |

Most people simply make their own sumps....
If you're speaking of a wet/dry style sump, then that technology has basically gone by the wayside. As for one tank being quieter than another....if you're talking about the overflow, then I had an All-Glass Megaflow that was stone silent. No experience with Marineland, but their new deep series of tanks are friggin awesome.

In my opinion the sump itself is not going to make any noise. The noise will be coming from the actual water draining down and the return (depending on the pump you use). Not sure what youre working with but if your tank is not tempered it can be drilled and you can do many different things to drain the water to the sump( size may also make a difference due to amount of water that is draining) new set up tanks may be louder than others because the slime needs to build up in the pvc. As far as a HOB overflow they are all different and some may siphon more than others, again this may also make a difference in the noise that you may get.
like dcombs44 said, I dont think a wet/dry is the best out there, having all those bio balls will only collect junk. I actually keep my sump simple ; good flow, protein skimmer, heater, return pump. My return pump is an eheim 1262 and my tank is drilled ( 2 drains 1 1/2 inch pvc) just got quite after 3 weeks). I can now say my tank is quite.

i use an old display fishtank from a pet store, you no the one with a divider in it then has a few slits in it. works great. most noise is from water draining into sump
