I finally got my Mag test kit today.

Test results are 1200 ppm just on the low side. What do you try to keep your Mag level at?

With my order I also picked up B-Ionic Magnesium.

Directions: Add 1.5 ml per gallon of aquarium capacity per day until a target level of 1200 - 1350 ppm magnesium is reached. I still don't know how many total gallons I have... I guess 120??? 90 gal DT with 40 gal sump... 3/4 full???

The preferred level of mag is 1300 ppm. Personally I like 1400ppm as Melev and a few others have stated that their corals do better at this level.

As for total vol --I don't think your sump is more than half full do you? And the 90 is probably 80 with all your live rock.

Go by the chemistry calculator on here---rather than the directions on the side of the container.

you could always change your salt to a type with raised magnesium levels, 1200 is very low, as the capn i prefer mine around 1400, certainely 1350 at the minimum, i have used tropic marin bio-magnesium in the past, it did raise the level, but i prefer a better sythetic salt mix

And the 90 is probably 80 with all your live rock... I agree. My sump is at least 20 gal of water. I don't understand the sump volume calculator??? If it's 80 gal in DT and my figure of 20 gal in my sump... would that be 100 total gallons of tank volume?

I was told that before. I have almost a brand new bucket of IO salt. Next bucket will be something better. Thanks

yes

Use epsom salts to raise your magnesium levels--I got 2 lbs of it for about 7 dollars. You buy that at the drug store.

Epsom salts to temporarily raise your magnesium, but for longer use you would use magnesium chloride in conjunction with epsom salts right??

using epsom salts use to be a worry in deep sand beds over 4 inches or older sand beds that had never been maintained. There was a possiblility that hydrogen sulfide could be produced.
However I have been assured that it is not a problem in shallow sand beds.

I would still not use it long term--just to raise the level up because it take alot of the magnesium to raise the levels but alot lot less to maintain them. You could use magnesium chloride to maintain the level then.

The problem I was having with IO was keeping up the magnesium level at 1400ppm after 40 gal water changes biweekly. I would just get my mag level up then the water change would drive it down.
I just switched to h2ocean because there is only a 20 buck price difference but the stats are fantastic

This is a really great thread. I could use some other opionions however on the questions that are asked. I seem to be the only one fielding the questions. Even the original poster has chosen not to participate anymore??

[QUOTE=capn_hylinur;12882440]Refugiums are a real asset to the filtering system in your tank. They also supply a good source of live food eg copopods for fish like mandarines

here is a thread on refugiums There is an index on page 8

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...5&pagenumber=8

There is also a slide show and article in June's ReefKeeping Magazine
