my marineland 65 cube noise. help

i just got a 65 cube. i thought this would have the normal overflow design i was used to from perfecto/marinland. but it has a very small overflow in the middle. i had a gurgle problem with my last tank which was a 180 and cant remember how i fixed it but i did something with the standpipes. on this tank the lines come out the back and there is no room for mods. i have a valve on each line and tried playing around with shutting this one down a bit or whatever and nothing. the water will rise in the overflow and then fall quickly and give a terrible gurgle. any help? thanks

Can you take a picture of the plumbing so we can supply a few pointers/ideas?

i wish i could take a pic. but its so tight and the overflow is in the middle not the sides so id have to pull tank out just to get a pic of the overflow box. what i did find though is i valved off my supply little by little until i seem to have things balanced out. the first time i played with the valves (which are on both in supply and return line) i valved down the return to the sump and thought i had it until a few minuetes later it started overflowing out the top of my aquarium. so i thought and thought about it and even talked directly to perfecto. they were very nice but really had no definate answer. so i got home and tried valving down the supply. and so far its working fine. i think i was pushing water in faster than it was returning to sump and it would get so high in the overflow that it would act like a vacum breaker and allow it to flush itself down.

Sounds like you're good. I would not restrict the drain, but dialing back the return (depending on the pump) is perfectly fine. As long as your tank/sump turnover is enough to get surface filtration, the correct amount for your skimmer, and to keep your temp levels correct... then you're in good shape.
