How hot is too hot? - Iwaki MD-70RLT
Hi!
I was just wondering what you all thought was too hot for an Iwaki MD-70RLT pump (Japanese Motor) to run at was... Currently, it is too hot to hold my hand on for more than a few seconds or so. It has a straight 10" shot for intake water using 1" pipe like it should, and the exit is through 1" pipe which splits into 4 3/4" pipes, all wide open. Any input here is appreciated! Thanks!

A lot of the external pumps can run pretty toasty. The AO Smith darts get REAAAAAALY hot. If your tank temps are in check and you don't have any signs of issues, I wouldn't immediately be overly concerned about fixing it this second.
That being said, a very small fan can cut down on the temperature DRASTICALLY. A 80-120mm computer fan or desk fan sitting on top of the pump can often easily drop the temp 20-40 degrees. That can put less stress on the pump as well as ensuring heat stays out of the tank.

That's a good idea! I will definitely be doing that as it is what is keeping my water in the 83-85 range...
Yeah, the AO Smiths do... I felt one at my LFS, and it was exactly the same...
