Assuming your talking about using cree xpg's or xre's
1 LED to every 10-20" squared of surface area was recommended to me as a good starting point. I'd say most tend to do a ratio of 1:3 (white/blue) and after seeing how bright the 12 cool white xpg's are I may do the same but I'll be starting with a 1:1 ratio next month probally and go from there.

I would start w/12 just to get an idea of what you want for sure b4 you added more.
If your not worried about dimming the LED's then use this one instead http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-...ium-LED/Detail If you want the option to dimm, then this one http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-...ium-LED/Detail The original one you had wasn't the xpg's which are supposed to be 30% brighter then the xre's EDIT: also if you haven't done so I would go over to "DIY LEDs - The write-up" and read through some of the stuff.

In the article I reffered to you, TheFishMan65 was kind enough to write up a summary.

depending on the species of coral in the tank you will need at least 40 if not more leds. 12 will get you nowhere. i have a bc 14 that has 12 and a friend has a bc29 with 24, anything less will not sustain all forms of coral and will limit your choices
