Lighting question's looking to be answered

I just bought 2x250 watt retrofit kits from ebay.cam with sockets, reflectors, ballasts and 2 250w reef grow 20k bulbs.the kit cost me $260.The bulds I looked up on line and they go for about $70 a piece. My questions are,the bulbs are they any good or just your run of the mill bulb.and how much does the ballast play in the actual lighting that is being produced.I know that a more expensive ballast is made of better quality and warranty etc.... or should I really just care about what bulbs I am using?
