Skimmer Question

Hello,

I have been out of the hobby for 15 years and decided to get back in. Things have changed a bit! Im slowly working on setting up a 120 and one of my purchaces was the new Super Reef Octopus 2000 internal. It states that the water cannot be over the water outlet, which is 6". I have built my sump so that section is 9". My question is, Can I lengthen the pipe to make the water outlet 9" inches, or should I just raise the skimmer??

thx
dj

Raise the skimmer is really your only option

I have tried just raising the pipe like you want and it does not help, you still need to adjust the water level inside the skimmer

I have the SRO Internal 3000 and originally had in 9 inches of water. I ran it that way for nearly two months with great skimmate. I then had it start overflowing like CRAZY and ended up building a stand while troubleshooting and found that the actual problem was the epoxy I used putting some frags in the day before

Long story short....Stand seems to give me a better ability to adjust but don't seem to think that it is any more efficient. I've not researched but can the output being below the water be harder on the pump?

According to Coralvue having the outlet under water or at water level causes backpressure on the outlet and will cause overflowing.

I would just build a little stand out of eggcrate or acrylic for the skimmer to sit on.

lengthening the incircled pipe, raising the water outlet, not a good idea?

See attached picture.

Thx for the opinions.

If you increase the height of the water outlet you will increase the height of the water in the skimmer column reducing the space for the gunk to build up. Therefore you will at best generate dirty water collecting in the cup, or worst of all, flood your cabinet - I have found that the misses gets very upset when this happens!

Just a thought. Sounds like the best answer is just build a platform and raise the skimmer up 3".
Dont want to do anything that might upset the War Department!

Thank for the help.
