Our fishy wish list
So we have a 55 gal that will be set up with LPS, soft corals, NPS corals, and an enemone of some sort, shrimp, deresa clam, possibly sand sifter star, cleaning crew (no hermit crabs). So here's our fish wish list. Any comments welcome and advice on introducing the fish to the tank. Obviously, our angel will be last.
Springer's Dottyback Flame Hawkfish Black oscellaris pair OR percula pair Red Headed Fairy Wrasse OR McCosker's Flasher Wrasse OR Red Tail Flasher OR whipfin fairy Wrasse Some sort of goby (any suggestions welcome, thinking of YWM) Some sort of blenny? Will it conflict with the hawkfish for territory in a 55? Whitetail (sometimes called yellowtail) Angel OR Coral Beauty OR Bluespotted Angel OR Black Velvet Angelfish Any advice would be appreciated! |

Not sure about any but the clowns and angel. Clowns you are good on whether you go false perc or the black ones. Persional preference there. I have had both and they all were good. The angel, you better do your research on which one you get and how "reef safe" they are. Most of the pygmy angels are 'use with caution'. I got a swallow angel and it is reef safe, hasn't touched any of my mushrooms, leather, hammer, or polyps. Some are good if you feed them well, but still a chance. Also some are really hard to acclimate and get to eat. I tried a singapore angel and it basically starved to death and disapeared cause it never came out of hiding and ate.

Thanks, yeah I know about the angels and if it does start messing with our corals, our LFS will trade it for us for something else (they have amazingly healthy fish). Anyone else have any comments?

I don't think the hawkfish will be reef-safe as they tend to eat shrimp and stuff. And the angels are going to be tricky. A coral beauty or maybe a flame angel might work out.

Will the hawkfish mess with bigger shrimp? They don't get large so that was my thinking. I've dealt with tricky fish before. I used to have discus and those are one of the most tricky fresh water fish to deal with. I don't mind trying an angel even if it's a little more difficult.

I think so; they just can't help themselves. And as for the angels, well, I don't know if I'd call them difficult like a discus, as far as keeping them alive. It's just that they're going to nip your corals. And when they start doing that, it sucks.
You'd think that maybe they'd just go ahead and eat it, which would probably be better. Instead, they'll go around nipping at every single one, leaving a little tear in them. |
