Advice on Koralias please
Hello, I am hoping to get some advice on the flow in my tank.
I have a 5' 120 gallon tank. Currently home to just fish and a few soft corals, will be adding LPS and SPS at a later time. There is about 200 lbs of live rock stacked along the entire back length of the tank almost up to the waterline. I am running a Red Sea wavemaker with two maxi jet 1200's and 2 maxi jet 600's. I want to upgrade to several of the Koralia Evolution powerheads. I am aware that Vortechs and Tunzes are better, but do not want to spend that kind of money. What Koralia Evoltion models and in what number would provide a good amount of flow in my tank? Also, once purchased, where in the tank should I position the new powerheads? |

+1 on Koralia 1400,I would recommend 4 of them for size of your tank ,I had two on 65gal.and it was just enough.

get 4 of the 1400's and put them on a wave maker. Position them where they cover the tank adequately and then put each pair on opposite wavemaker schedules. You could also position them so that 2 running make clockwise flow and then the other 2 make counter-clockwise flow. Run each for 5 or so mins so your flow is always alternating. Add a Reef Keeper Lite to your to do list if you don't have something similar already. I use that for my wave maker and temp regulation

Honestly with that much liverock and that size of a tank, I would recommend a mixture of Koralia 1400s (the evolutions) and one or two Koralia Magnums.
I have 5x Koralia 850's in my 90 and found that I had to take out some rock to get the flow I wanted. |

I was thinking of running 3 x 1400's with one on each end of the tank and one along the back wall in the middle pointing towards the front of the tank and leaving a maxi 1200 behind the rockwork to help reduce deadspot there. With the way the Redsea Wavemaker works, I could set it so that the Maxi runs alternating off/on with the 1400 in the middle, with the two at each end running off/on against each other. I think this would create a good amount of turbulence and variable flow. It would give a good amount of turbulence at the top levels of the tank and leave some lower flow areas towards the bottom where I can place the softies. Also this, along with my return pump should give me about 41 x turnover in the tank, which I hope would be enough for some SPS towards the top of the tank. Any thoughts on this potential setup?
