RO/DI storage
Hi All,
Well, before thinking things completely thru, I purchased a couple of the Blue plastic food safe 55 gallon barrels from a Koi farm. They had just gotten them in. They were used for Horse Shampoo, and still have a gallon or so in the bottom... These are not removable top barrels, they only have the 2 bungs on top. Is there any way to be sure these are perfectly clean for my RO/Salt storage, or should I just scrap these and find something else? I am starting a 75 gallon tank with about a 20-25 gallon sump. Thanks |

Myself, I would never feel confident that I had rinsed and cleaned them well enough to have my RO/DI water stored in them without something leaching into the water. But I tend to feel that Murphey's Law applies to reef tanks with a vengance and try not to take chances I can avoid.

You really don’t need that much storage for a 75 gal tank. I have three tanks, the largest being a 75 gal. I have two joined 13 gal containers for my ro/di water and a 32 gal brute for my mixed saltwater.
IMO I wouldn’t trust the chemicals in the shampoo either. It could possibly permeate the pores of the plastic, never come out and continually leach into your water. |
