Rinsing filters and sponges
When cleaning and rinsing out a filter or the sponge, is it ok to use tap water?
If not, what about rinsing with tap water then a quick final rinse of purified water? |

Dont use tap water!!!!!
Use sea water from the tank. I usualy use the water out of my tank when i do my water changes. And if any critters come out, i scoup them and feed them to my fish.

I use tap water. I keep extra sets of filters and allow the newly cleaned filters to dry out between uses.

You are talking about mechanical pre-filters and not the biological sponge filter, right? If it's a mechanical pre-filter, yes, use tap water and just squeeze it dry before replacing it. If it's a bilogical filter, rinse it in salwater to get the detritus out and not kill the bateria.

after I change my tank water I use the dirty water from the tank to clean them out (not really dirty water just what was in the tank previous to the water change. I know its not the cleanest thing but it will get rid of all the nasties in the filter sponge and that way you arent wasting fresh ro water.
