Do pods survive hyposalinity?
I'm afraid I may know the answer. Anyway, I have all my fish in 1.009-1.010 SG for Ich therapy. They all seem pretty content and happy. Eating like the pigs that they are. Even the Mandarin dragonet is happily pecking and hunting. I just realized today, hunting and pecking what? Do pods survive in hyposalinity? Is there anything that survives that the dragonet can eat? He won't eat prepared foods.

That makes me wonder, do you really need to pull a mandarin from a DT when going fallow? Since their slime coating makes them pretty much immune to ich I wonder if it is actually neccessary.

I just put ALL the fish in hypo as a general rule. Reportedly, no fish is immune, just that some are more susceptible than others.
I am, however, worried about the little guy. I don't want him to starve to death. OTOH, I am going through this huge circus of treating all my fish, and I'd hate to compromise it by making an exception with the little guy.

Have you considered treating him with copper in a separate container so you could then move him to a separate QT with live rock to pick on? the copper treatment only takes 14 days as opposed to hypo. |

AFAIK, copper treatment to be effective needs 4 weeks minimum, preferably 6, due to the life cycle of the Cryptocaryon. Copper attacks the free swimming stage, hypo the cyst stage, so all the Ich have to go through the cycle for the treatment to work at the appropriate stage. That cycle is 4 weeks from one end to the other.
The more I think about it, the more PO'd I get. That dragonete was one of my first fish. Not knowing any better, I got him when my tank had not even cycled. By some miracle, he survived my stupidity. Now, I may kill him with this treatment. Dang it! It's not fair!

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with not taking any chances, was really just curious about the thoughts on this.

I hear you, James. Well, he survived a cycling tank, maybe he'll survive a hypo tank. Fingers crossed.

my mandarin eats anything i put in the tank Most fish can go at least two weeks without eating. If you see him getting real thin while he's in QT then I'd consider trying a different diet or just go ahead and put him intot he DT. Allthough they can carry ich thier slime coat usually prevents it. So that fish would be the one where if you were having troubles with his health you could probbaly get away with puting him back in the DT as a last resort.

Ooooh, very tempting. He's still pecking at somethings, so he's eating something. I'll continue to drop foods, and kinda spot feed in front of him, and see.

Here is what I would do. Pull water with a turkey baster from your refugium, right in cheato somewhere. Try to target feed him that water. The pods should at least survive for a little while, and he may not thrive, but should get a little something to eat. Just dont allow it to raise your salinity...
