Question What is the difference?

What is the difference of having your tank drilled, or having an overflow box? What are the advantages of having your tank drilled and how does that work?

Having your tank drilled is a much safer and better option if you can. The hang on overflow box and the overflow do the same thing though, but there is a few key points.

1. Drilled Overflow's won't lose its siphon while hang over styles can due to them using a tube over the top of the tank hanging to the back.

2. Drilled Overflow's aren't prone to getting plugged up and not draining while overflow boxes are due to the design of tubes, so it will have to be checked and cleaned often.

If eiether one of these would happen, than you can kiss that sump water to the carpet/floor as it oveflows the tank water

there are all sorts of ways people drill their tanks but the one i was talking about in the other post is side drilled near the top. what you do is you get your tank drilled by someone who knows what they're doing, they drill a small hole and then you put what's called a bulkhead in it. this is this plastic looking thing that going through the hole and keeps it water tight and prevents it from cracking too. then you attach your plumbing to the bulkhead and you that as a drain. the good thing about it is you never have to worry about keeping the siphon, like you would with a siphon overflow box like the one you were talking about in the other post.

drilled is the only safe way to go. IMO the best setups are drilled tanks with external overflows. its the only way to prevent losing siphon and have a much cleaner look and more useable space

Some people like the bottom pre-drilled ones with an internal box since you can put the tank right up against a wall and hide everything. With regards to overflow box vs pre-drilled, well, even the marketers of the HOB overflow box will tell you that drilled is better.

The difference is drilled tanks are for PIMPS! (smart reefers)
and overflow boxes are for noobs! (self explanatory)

I personally ran an overflow box and it got so annoying with those air bubbles etc. that i took down the tank and did it again!
