Sand dollars reef safe?

i recently purchased a sand dollar at the lfs. i was wondering if they are good to have in a reef tank. info would help. thanks

They filter feed from the sand bed so it might be difficult to keep alive, but there should be no issues with it in your reef. It's probably a better idea to ask if something is reef safe before you buy it though.

Safe? yes. IMO they are best left in the ocean. An extremely well established sand bed is needed as they are sand sifters and you would likely pollute your tank by adding the required amounts of food to keep them alive. In nearly all instances I have personally seen, they have starved to death.

I had one for a few months. It was attacked by polyclads so it never had the chance to starve. Store I bought it from would not except the dried out corpse as currency.

I would think if you have a well established sand bed and not too many other critters eating away at it you could keep one. However I am just guessing. You don't really hear of anyone keeping them, either successfully or not.

it barely covers itself up with sand. i believe im going to try and take it back to the lfs before the wwekend. thanks
