temporary tank ....cattle trough ...anyone ?

does anyone have any input or threads on cattle troughs for temporary tanks ? i have a 70 gallon tank that has been set up for over a year and i need to take it down for a bit for moving . this temporary tank may be set up for a few months but i need to do this move within the next week , so how should i go about getting the system to cycle quick so i can move my live stock over to it ?

thanks

Are you talking about the big 75-100 Gallon Rubbermaid containers you can buy? If so, I would take your water with you when you move, that whay there wont be a cycle. Just put the water and rocks in buckets and move it like that. I moved a 75 gallon setup this way and it went flawless. I moved it almost 90 miles away and didnt lose a thing. Good luck with this.

yes the ones around 100 gals , i thought about maybe doing a 300 gal one to maybe slowly cure some new rock but im not so sure about that . might have to get some advice on that , but i kicked around the idea of maybe using this as an excuse to go to a bigger tank , lol . but maybe ill just let well enough alone and keep it simple .

thanks again

The Rubbermaid ones are often used for part of a pond filtration system. Maybe you can assume that saltwater won't cause a problem.

You might want to consider craigslist for a used tank to use temporarily.

A 300 gallon one would be really big. I would do 3 100 gallon containers.

IMO, not 'exactly' true...the bacteria, you want to save, is in the rock and sand, not the water, changing/adding new rock or sand, LR out of water too long, etc., can cause a new cycle.
There is no way that you'll be able to save all of your water, it will be very cloudy from removing LR and sand...make sure you prepare plenty of new salt water, before hand.

Sorry for not clarifying...I just assumed that he would be keeping his rock and sand. As I stated before, I did this with a 75 gallon system and used the rock, sand and water out of the tank. The rock and sand was in its own tank water the whole time.

What I did was moved everything from point A to point B and put the sand in the tank and filled it about 10% full. That mixed the sand up really well and the water looked muddy. I siphoned that 10% water out and put a 1 gallon ice cream bucket in the tank and put 60% of the original tank water back in. I used the ice cream bucket in to take the brunt of the water pressure hitting the sand and it worked perfectly. I them put 40% new water in. Got it up to the right temp and put the fish in. I didnt lose any corals or fish using this method.
