I have a LifeReef overflow, they are very well built and considered to be the best.
Is your tank already up and running? What size is it?

No i do not have one set up just yet. Still trying to decide between the 150G Tall tank we have now that is tempered and getting a 240g. The boss only want to do this once.

Do you know anything about there skimmers and how they compare?

Everybody says the overflows are the best out there. So i think if we keep the 150 i will go with there overflow.

Those are both large tanks It would be better to make your own overflow. I believe that All Glass I am pretty sure that is wrong, has a kit to make your own overflow box, ie drill through the back of the tank. Most tanks are tempered on the bottom usually not on the back but you will need to make sure first. Lifereefs skimmers are good not sexy so most people want the lasted and greatest. You are one post away from being able to buy on the used forum you can save a lot of money but you will need to make a shopping list.
How tall is the 150?
What do you want to keep?
Do you have any equipment other than the tank?

The 150 is 48x24x30 tall. I know since this is a very tall tank that it will have one other issue of lighting, but i believe i have that figured out. The sticker thats on the underside of the bottom says it tempered. I dont know how to check if it is or not.
I just have the stand and tank, nothing else. I still need to make another post on how to remove scratches from glass soon too.
Ive still got some time to research equipment and fish. But i am planning on softies, zooas, and lps (the easier to keep??)

Here is a thread that a few RC members are discussing different methods of being able to tell if a pane of glass is tempered or not.

Find yourself a couple cheap polarized lenses and take a look.

1. If it says it's tempered, believe it. It's not unusual for a tall tank to have the sides tempered also because of the thickness of the glass needed for the extra pressure.
2. Lifereef makes an excellent skimmer, but due to the older technology it needs a Large/powerful pressure rated pump to run it efficiently.

If you invest in a new tank get internal overflows. In the long run you will be much happier with it.

Im not going to take the chance. It does say tempered and i dont want to drill and end up with a 3 sided tank. I can tell you the sides are 1/2 inch thick panes of glass.

If i upgrade ill most likely turn this tank into a fuge.

So if your are going to use a an external overflow Lifereef is the right way to go. They have two models I believe for that tank the single tube and double tube, I have the single tube so you may want to go with the double , that model will move a lot of water.

Go with the bigger tank. If your allowed to do it now just go for it.

Some of those tanks were tempered on all of the panes.

I have/had Life reef skimmer and sump (L-200). The sump is just way to small and the skimmer is an older design. My tank nitrates where in the .35-40ppm range. Now with the BK 300 im at .5ppm. I keep the small sump and dumped the water from it into a larger 100g rubber made sump for more volume.

LifeReef components are very well made, I have a CLF2 sump and matching 'fuge. I've never used their skimmers, or overflows, but you cannot go wrong with their acrylic work. It's nothing short of spectacular!

All that said, I believe there are better skimmer options available, and Pro-Clear makes a similar overflow although IMO LifeReef's craftsmanship far outshines Pro-Clear. I've used a few similar hang on overflows and the design of either looks sound. With enough flow to wash air bubbles through, I never had a problem other than algae in a u-tube that wasn't human caused.

An alternative when you figure out if the back glass is temered or not is a kit from http://www.glass-holes.com/ for $100 you'd be in business.

HTH, Tim
